Cottage Pie

This week midweek meal is a Cottage Pie. Although this is a bit of a British classic I’d never actually made it.

Mainly because James and the twins are not really keen on mashed potatoes, but after being a family for nearly 15 years and never having it, I felt it was time to give it a go.

Colby, Courtney and Carson like mashed potatoes so I thought at least half of us will like it!

1 tbsp olive oil

750g beef mince

2lb Maris Piper potatoes

1 onion sliced

2 carrots sliced

6 closed cup mushrooms sliced

100g peas

3 garlic cloves diced

1 celery stick sliced

1 4oog chopped tin tomatoes

2 tbsp tomato puree

1 beef stock cube

1 tbsp mixed herbs

A dash of Worcester sauce

50g butter

Let’s Go

1/ In a large pan heat the oil and brown the mince for 4-5 mins, add the onion, carrots, peas, celery, mushrooms and garlic and fry for a further 5 mins

2/ Pre heat the oven to 180. Peel and quarter the potatoes, and boil for 20 mins

3/ While the potatoes are cooking add the tinned tomatoes, tomato puree, mixed herbs, Worcester sauce and stock cube to the mince mixture. Finally adding a cup of cold water and salt and pepper. Bring it all to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes.

4/ When the potatoes are boiled, mash them well adding the butter until all creamed. Pour the mince mixture into an ovenproof dish and spoon the mash on top. Using a fork smooth it all over mince until all covered.

5/ Transfer to the oven and bake for 25 mins or until the top has turned golden brown. Top with grated cheese for the last 5-10 mins if you wish.

Cerise and I are the only one’s that like cheese so we added it once plated, and we served with broccoli. I really enjoyed this meal, I’ve waited so long to have it and it was so worth it. Colby, Courtney and Carson also really enjoyed it, but it was still a thumbs down from the twins. They did give it a good go, and did eat most of the mince, but it was as I thought the mashed potatoes that they didn’t enjoy.

So will I make it again? Absolutely, but I guess it will be for just half the family. James and the twins will not be part of the next cottage pie dinner, but strangely will eat mince, boiled potatoes and broccoli!! Go figure!
